Out there in Alaska © Gavin McClurg |
Gavin McClurg is a professional US adventure pilot who is pushing boundaries in paragliding in the US and elsewhere. His most recent adventure was a never-before-done six-week traverse of the 750km-long Alaska Range.
Gavin is also a prolific writer and podcaster, and hosts Cloudbase Mayhem, a series of in-depth interviews with pilots from around the world. He writes a regular column for us at Cross Country Magazine (I'm the editor) and so, as I watched the little dot that is Live Tracking cross Alaska, I wondered how he would interview himself about this mammoth trip.
I asked him if he'd like me to interview him, and he said yes... The result is a two-hour podcast that covers a lot more than Alaska – but it really comes alive in the Alaska part. He's a great storyteller, and it was very interesting and a privilege to hear the story firsthand.

In this episode of the Cloudbase Mayhem we turn the tables a bit and put Gavin on the other end of the interview. Ed Ewing, the editor of Cross Country magazine takes over as show-host and asks Gavin the questions many people have wanted to know about how it all went down on the traverse. We talk about the Red Bull X-Alps, a very close brush with death on a river in Mexico, how Gavin’s obsession with paragliding started and find out what led to his 6-year pursuit of a dream- to traverse the full length of the Alaska Range by paraglider and foot. We find out what went right, what went wrong, what gear was used, what happened after Dave had to leave, and hear some pretty wild stories of what went down. I think this episode will make you laugh and it will certainly make you shake your head, and hopefully- inspire you to go big!
